Rehearse your message out loud before recording

Seasoned performers rehearse, why shouldn’t you? By saying your script out loud before you call in to record it you will get a better feel for the best pace and where to add emphasis in your voice. Your message will then sound more natural and personal – and unscripted.

Talk a bit slower and louder than in normal conversation

Which rooms in the household are your members most likely to be in when they answer the phone? 1) Kitchen; 2) TV room. This means there is often visual and aural competition you must unknowingly contend with. To help your member direct their focus away from such distractions, speak up a bit and slow down a bit.

Don’t worry about speaking too loudly. A Union Calling sound technician will tone down your recording if the volume is too high. We will also take out your breath intakes, tongue clicks, unnatural-sounding pauses and so on. We want you to sound your best.

Give Union Calling 2 or 3 takes to work with in editing

Your message will be heard by hundreds or, more likely, thousands of your members. It’s worth taking an extra minute or two to give our editors more material to work with.

You will not be surprised to learn that the second or third take usually (though not always) sounds better and more relaxed and personal. Or that a different emphasis on a word or phrase in the second take sounds better than how you said it at first.

At Union Calling, we listen carefully to all your takes and seamlessly edit them according to your script. We then email you the edited message for your approval. If you wish, we’ll also send you your unedited recording so that you can hear the difference that skilled digital editing makes.

If you make a mistake, no need to go back to the beginning

You’re in the middle of a take and you stumble on a word or two. It happens all the time. Don’t worry and don’t bother going back to the beginning of your message. Just say: “I’ll do that again,” and just go back to the beginning of the sentence. Our editor will simply take out the mistake and create a complete take to work with.

Actually, you don’t even need to say: “I’ll do that again.” If the mistake is obvious and you have repeated the sentence, our editor will know and edit accordingly.

You can even redo two or more sentences within a take. If you didn’t make a mistake but simply didn’t like the way you said something, just say “I’ll try that again,” and repeat what you wish.
